Figo Pet Insurance is a Chicago-based company that strives to simplify pet insurance. They offer flexible plans and work to give pet owners choices so that they can receive the type of coverage that they need.
Figo also strives to take advantage of modern technology with their Figo Pet Cloud app.
Figo is an award-winning insurance company with an extremely high customer satisfaction rate. Reviews.com named it the best pet insurance company in 2017, 2018, and 2019 [1].
If you’re considering coverage for Figo, this review will help you to determine whether or not this insurance company is a good match for you and your pets.
How Figo Pet Insurance Works
Figo pet insurance is designed to protect users from the financial stress associated with pet ownership. Their insurance plans provide coverage to both dogs and cats [2].
They allow you to bring your animal to any emergency hospital or licensed veterinary practice in the US, Canada or Puerto Rico.
Depending on the plan selected, customers may be reimbursed for up to 100% of their veterinary bills. Customers will be able to customize a plan that meets their needs and then purchase that plan.
They will pay their bills when receiving veterinary care, then submit those bills through the Figo Pet Cloud app.
On average, Figo plans cost less than $1 each day.
Although Figo has only been around since 2012, their plans are underwritten by well-established insurance companies.
Depending on your location, your plan will be underwritten by Markel American Insurance Company or Independence American Insurance Company, which are both companies that have been around for decades.
Here’s a closer look at how the Figo Pet Cloud works:
Figo Coverage Options
Figo provides three different levels of coverage for pets. Their most basic plan is the Essential plan.
They also offer a Preferred plan and an Ultimate plan. Each of these plans is available for both dog and cat owners, and plans can be customized to meet a pet’s individual needs.
Figo does not offer any sort of wellness plan. All of their plans are designed to cover illness and injury. They offer an unlimited lifetime benefit plan and have no per-incident cap on claims.
There is a 100% reimbursement option available for care that is covered under one of their insurance plans.
Covered Conditions & Treatments
Coverage will vary based on the type of plan chosen.
However, Figo plans can provide coverage for many medical expenses, including exam & consultation fees, hospitalization costs, surgeries, chronic conditions, and prescriptions.
They also provide treatment for hereditary conditions and cancer treatment.
They do not provide coverage for routine care, spaying/neutering, cosmetic procedures, breeding, cloning procedures, or pre-existing conditions. Figo’s plans are specifically designed to cover unexpected medical costs for pets.
Any type of care that does not fall under this umbrella will not be covered.
Do They Cover Alternative Therapies?
Figo will reimburse clients for alternative therapies, including chiropractic treatment and acupuncture.
However, these treatments must be provided by a licensed veterinarian. Holistic treatments will only be covered if they are designed to treat a condition that is covered under Figo’s insurance policy.
Figo is far more flexible than other pet insurance providers, and they will allow pet owners to choose veterinary care that they are comfortable with.
If you are interested in bringing your pet to a veterinarian that specializes in alternative medicine, you’ll have the option of getting reimbursed for that care through Figo.
Benefit Limits
The benefit limits you will have with Figo will vary based on the choices that you make. Unlimited coverage is not the default option.
Instead, you will be able to choose between plans that offer a $10,000 or $14,000 limit and an unlimited plan.
Figo does not have any sort of benefits schedule, which means that Figo members won’t have to wait for a schedule to reset before they can receive specific types of treatment.
Because Figo plans are designed to offer a high level of customization, customers will be able to decide on the benefits limits they would like their plan to have.
How Much Does it Cost per Month?
The total cost of coverage through Figo will vary based on the plan that you select and your benefits limit. Costs will also change based on the type of pet you have, as well as its age and breed.
The starting premium for a cat is $28.99, while the starting premium for a dog is $52.85.
Figo does offer a number of discounts, including discounts for veterans and serving military members as well as discounts for students and veterinary clinic staff. There is also a corporate group benefits plan available.
If you decide to pay in a lump sum, you’ll pay a lower fee than you would if you made payments monthly.
If you’re interested in enrolling in a Figo plan, you’ll be able to look at potential costs before signing up. You’ll also be able to make adjustments to your plan so that you can find ways to lower costs.
Deductible Options
Figo allows customers to decide what kind of deductible options they would like to have. The minimum deductible offered is $50, while the highest available deductible is $500. There are four deductible options in total.
If a pet is receiving life-saving care, Figo will waive the deductible. This is one of the things that helps to set Figo apart from some of its competitors.
When your pet is enrolled in Figo, you won’t have to worry about whether or not you can afford essential care. If you’re in an emergency situation, your pet will always have the coverage that you need.
How Reimbursement Works
Customers will be able to submit invoices for their bills to Figo via the Figo cloud app. After a claim has been approved, the money that the customer is owed will be directly deposited into their bank account.
The cloud app will also make it easy to track the state of a claim.
Figo offers four different reimbursement models: 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%. When customers are customizing their plan, they will be able to choose their reimbursement model.
While higher reimbursement models come with higher premiums, a plan with a higher reimbursement model could ultimately save customers money.
How Do You File a Claim?
In order to file a claim through Figo, you’ll need to log into the Figo Pet Cloud. You can do this from any mobile device or a desktop computer. Once you select the “claims” icon, you’ll be asked a few questions.
After completing those questions, you’ll be able to upload or attach a copy of your paid invoice and submit a claim.
You’ll also have to authorize your veterinarian to send your pet’s medical records to Figo.
Customers also have the option of filing a claim via phone or fax.
It’s also possible to download the claims form on the Figo website [3] and send it to them via email.
Providing Figo with medical records and a copy of the paid invoice will still be necessary.
After a claim has been submitted, along with all necessary documentation, it will be processed. Figo promises to process all claims within 30 days but processes the majority of claims in 7 to 10 business days.
If any required documentation is not submitted, claims could take much longer to process.
Thankfully, the Figo claims process provides you with easy-to-follow steps. If you haven’t submitted any essential documentation, you’ll be notified so that you can provide the needed documents and receive the money that you are owed.
Waiting Periods
If you are hoping to purchase coverage for a newly-born puppy, you will have to wait until they are eight-weeks old before insuring them through Figo.
Figo also has a 14-day waiting period for illnesses and a 5-day waiting period for accidents. Your plan may also have a waiting period for knee care.
Figo’s waiting periods are fairly lax, especially when compared to other insurance providers. While you won’t be able to start using your coverage immediately, you won’t have to wait long for the waiting period to expire.
Most Figo customers do not need to use their coverage before their waiting period is up.

Most of what we have seen has been overwhelmingly positive. The few complaints we encountered, were responded to directly by a member of the Figo team, and appeared that they were working toward a resolution.
Based on their solid customer scores, and our own research, we feel confident recommending Figo as a trusted insurance provider for the needs of you and your pet.
Review Summary
If you want to make sure that your pet is protected in the event of an unexpected illness or injury, Figo can provide you with the coverage that you need.
Figo allows you to tailor policies so that they meet your needs.
They have plenty of affordable options and offer a great deal of value for the price.
With that said, Figo isn’t going to be the right choice for all pet owners. Because Figo doesn’t offer any sort of wellness plan, customers that are seeking that kind of coverage will have to look elsewhere.
They only provide coverage to dog and cat owners, so owners of other types of pets will have to look at other insurance companies.
If you’re not interested in wellness coverage, and you’re seeking insurance for a dog or a cat, Figo is one of the best options available to you.
They provide excellent coverage and fast payout, and their numerous customization options allow you to create a policy that’s right for you.
The Figo Cloud app also gives you access to features that you won’t be able to access anywhere else.
